Cawthron Science Leader Award

The Cawthron Trust was established in 1919 through a bequest from shipping agent, Thomas Cawthron.

It invests in initiatives to promote and develop scientific research.

The Trust owns the Cawthron Institute, a Nelson-based research, consulting and analytical organisation which supports sustainable management of the country's coastal and freshwater environment, and the development of New Zealand's seafood industry.

Cawthron Science Leader Award

Cawthron Trust is pleased to be able to continue Thomas Cawthron's legacy by offering a unique scholarship opportunity - the Cawthron Science Leader Award - for leaders in the science sector to participate in the Hillary Leadership Programme.

The Cawthron Institute Trust Board is proud to announce that the winner of this year's Cawthron Science Leader Award is Dr Richard Gordon, Science General Manager (Environment & Society) at Landcare Research - Manaaki Whenua.
The Award, valued at almost $25,000, provides an all-expenses-paid place for Dr Gordon on the prestigious 18-month Hillary Leadership Programme, run by the New Zealand Leadership Institute, a highly regarded leadership development and research institute based at the University of Auckland Business School.

Internationally recognised for his work in implementing the values and goals of sustainable development, Dr Gordon is very grateful to the Cawthron Trust Board, that has been "far-sighted in using the Cawthron Science Leader Award to support the integration of science and business in New Zealand".

Full story

Nick Edgar, CEO of the Landcare Trust and inaugural recipient of the Award was also hugely appreciative of the opportunity provided to him by the Cawthron Trust.

I started the Hillary Leadership Programme in October 2008 and have found the experience very rewarding. To be able to meet and share ideas on leadership with people from such a diverse range of backgrounds and careers has been unique and a once in a life time opportunity.  I now have a completely different perspective on leadership and a new network of colleagues to bounce ideas and projects off - which I'm sure will be sustained long after the programme ends.

The Cawthron Science Leader Award enabled me to participate in this Programme and I am very grateful to have been the inaugural recipient of this award.  I acknowledge the Cawthron Trust for having the vision and commitment to create an award that actively fosters the development of science leaders in New Zealand.

Application
